Temporary Chlorination Begins Monday, January 19

The Waitsfield Community Water System has experienced a significant increase in unaccounted-for water use since December 11. Despite extensive leak-detection efforts - using advanced equipment and assistance from the Vermont Rural Water Association - the source of the water loss (approximately 60,000 gallons per day) has not yet been identified. To put this into perspective, the system typically uses about 40,000 gallons per day, but current demand has climbed to nearly 100,000 gallons per day due to the ongoing leak.

As a precautionary public health measure, and because ongoing system work may cause brief periods of reduced water pressure, the Town will begin temporary chlorination of the water distribution system starting Monday, January 19. Chlorination is a standard and widely used practice to protect water quality when system pressure could be disrupted.

The water remains safe to use and drink.

No action is required by customers at this time, though some residents may notice a mild chlorine taste or odor. Please share this information with your neighbors.

We appreciate the community's patience as we continue leak-identification efforts and work to protect the reliability and safety of the water system.
